Chapter 8

Rem didn’t like the look of the three yellowed-eyed guys hanging by the bar. When he and Ford entered the bar, everyone literally gave them death stares, but Ford walked in like he didn’t give a damn. So awesome. That was one of the things Rem liked about his man. Wait. He was calling Ford his now?

He blushed and tossed a fry into his mouth, then took a bite of his burger. Rem widened his eyes as flavor exploded inside his mouth and the juices from the quarter pounder ran down his chin. Before he could grab a napkin, Ford beat him to the punch and wiped his lips.

“Good?” the werewolf said with a smile.

He took a few more bites, then moaned. That seemed like answer enough, because Ford chuckled. When Ford told him about his past and what his pack did to him, Rem’s heart ached for the werewolf. He’d known what it was like, being an outsider, because he’d grown up being the weird kid at school. The last guy everyone picked at gym class. A bully magnet.

Ford and his brothers were only kids back then when their parents left them. His Ford might have grown up to become this tough, sexy man, but he of all people knew that some scars never went away. One of the cowboys at the bar sauntered over, taking off his hat, so his unfriendly amber eyes glowed under the bar lights.

He swallowed. Ford pushed his chair back, but didn’t stand up. Rem’s heart started beating fast. He dropped his burger and rubbed his sweaty palms on his jeans as the two others joined the first. They were huge, built like bodybuilders, but Ford didn’t look bothered or the least bit intimidated.

“What’s up, fellas?” Ford drawled. “I don’t like it when people interrupt my lunch.”

“You have guts, showing your face around here, Ford,” the first, the one with beer belly, stated.

“Who the hell is this human? Your new fuck of the week or something?” asked the second, but right after he got the words out, Ford was on his feet. He didn’t even see Ford shove the shifter but the guy crashed to the nearest table. Ford bared his teeth and his pupils burned a dangerous, dark gold.

“Insult him again and I’ll rip out your entrails and choke you with it,” Ford said in a deadly, calm deadpan voice. “He’s just moved in, and doesn’t deserve any shit from you bastards. Walk away, Grant, or I’ll lose my temper. I don’t want trouble, not today.”

Grant scowled. “Too late, outcast. Trouble follows you everywhere. You’re a fucking plague. You walked in with him, so everyone knows he’s your fuck boy.”

He gasped as claws sliced out of Ford’s left hand. From the corner of his eye, the werewolf who fell into the table snarled softly at him. He slowly rose to his feet and hid behind Ford, clutching at his shirt. Ford was strong, no doubt about it, but could he take on three werewolves at the same time?

“Maybe we should leave,” he whispered to Ford.
